Rainforest Festival

On March 5th, Mrs. Thomas' 7th grade class held the annual Rainforest Festival. This is the third consecutive year for the festival. Activies included a visit from the Species Survival Center. This year's visitors included a sloth,

a tree porcupine,

a macaw, poison arrow frog,

and a giant boa constrictor.

Students were also treated to a banquet of tropical foods including papya,

mangos, kumquats, and passion fruits.

Mrs. Sikanas explained how many of the tropical fruits were grown and harvested.

During one session, Mr.Krim led students in a riotous game of predator prey in the gym. Students took advantage of some new software and interesting Internet sites to do a little research on their favorite rainforest animals. Mrs. Reichart introduced students to the threat of deforestation through a creative use of Skittles. Finally, students and staff had a presentation on Fremont Rainforest '98, and were given information on joining the next group to travel to the Amazon in 2000. This year's festival was made possible through a grant from the Fremont Area Foundation.

Rainforest 2000

Applications for Rainforest 2000 are due on April 2, 1999. Deposits, teacher recommendations, and essays should be turned in to Mrs. Thomas with your application. Notification of participants will be sent by mail the third week of April. At present, we have 54 students, parents, and staff interested in joining us next summer in the Amazon!

Duane Drake volunteers to be first in line for necessary shots for the trip!

Rainforest Sundae Sale

On March 26th the students of the Encore, (Krim & Thomas) volunteered to bake browies and dish up ice cream sundaes during all three lunches. Thanks to their hard work and FMS students hearty appetites, we raised enough money to adopt 3 acres of Peruvian rainforest in the Yacumama Reserve. This money will help to pay for training local natives to become rangers, educational programs, and gasoline for patrol boats necessary to enforce the Reserve's boarders. Everyone can make a difference.
